Now, picture creating and activating your Universal Account Number and not having to deal with paperwork, employer appointments, or data inconsistencies. Starting from 1 August 2025, the EPFO New Rules 2025 will move the UAN creation process fully to the Idapp UMANG app, eliminating the need to visit the offices physically. The process will, however, remain Aadhaar-centric, requiring only Aadhaar-based face authentication. Hence, the process will remain fully digital. This will transform the way millions of people manage their Provident Fund accounts.
Easing Access with Biometric Verification
The EPFO New Rules 2025 focus on face-recognition based biometric security. Members can now verify their identity using live scans leveraging Aadhaar Face RD on UMANG. This biometric authentication step eliminates the need for filling in forms and, by using Aadhaar data, removes manual typographical errors and guarantees accuracy.
Seamless Self-Service Without Employer Intervention
In the past, employees relied on their employers for UAN generation, creating long loops of waiting, following up and being persistent. Now, with these guidelines, all Indian citizens can create and activate their UAN on mobile phones. The only exceptions to this rule are foreign workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan who will have to continue with the employer-centric process.
Enhanced Accuracy and Security with Aadhaar Integration
Integrating Aadhaar’s face verification for UAN allocation has allowed EPFO to eliminate erroneous and duplicate entries while expediting core service access. Once authenticated, members are sent UANs via SMS and, thereafter, able to access passbooks, update KYC details, and file claims, thus fully digitising the Provident Fund access journey.
What Members Need to Get Started
Reforming the UAN requires the user to have an active Aadhaar number as well as a registered mobile number with the Aadhaar office for OTP verification. Users are required to install the UMANG and Aadhaar Face RD apps. Consent is given, mobile number OTP is verified, a quick face scan is done, and UAN generation or activation is completed for the session.
A New Chapter in Digital Provident Fund Management
Shifting to EPFO New Rules 2025 demonstrates a critical turning point for fully electronic governance of pension funds. With biometric verification exclusively placed with the EPFO for UANs, members are granted full autonomy and control over UAN management. This change greatly serves as a mark for other governmental units regarding how public service in India can be efficient and safe at the same time.
